About Us
Language Works - Taking you further

We conduct customised training, full- and part-time courses, and intensive and express workshops in the area of Communication, English, Mandarin, and Customer Service to organisations and individuals, helping create positive change in relationships. Every student is a special being to us, and every learning goal becomes ours too.

To us, communication can be simple, clear, and real.

Language Works was created out of a passion for communicating the way we should.

Our goal and measured success is when you relate to the people you work with, and the people you care about, in the most effective manner.

Language Works has been a partner of the Speak Good English Movement since 2012, raising awareness to the public by holding workshops at libraries. We work with the Children's Society for public speaking workshops and youth camps. We believe that in giving, we create positive energy that we can pass along to people around us.
Our Teaching Philosophy
We are a Chinese language school in Singapore When learning at Language Works, we ensure that you are making the most out of your learning experience by leading you in measured steps to achieve your language proficiency targets.

At our first meeting, we will be talking openly about any language problem areas, what you would like to learn and achieve. We take pride in our flexibility for customisation of your courses, for your organisation, or for yourself. When we say we are student-centric, it means we focus primarily on you - our learner - moving the lesson in the way that benefits you the most, and not at the convenience of our teachers. Throughout your course, our principal consultant Petrisha will follow up closely on whether your learning is going in the direction planned.

Our teachers are native and mother tongue speakers. We also speak Mandarin, French, Spanish, Italian, and Tamil. Together, we have more than 20 years of teaching experience, with  TESOL, CELTA, or CIDTT qualifications. Before assigning any coaches to you, we consider both the specialisation of the coaches and students, and the chemistry for the class dynamics. Our dedication and life experience will add to your learning for Everyday or Business English contexts.

Exposure, awareness, and practice are our beliefs for what make you improve in the way you communicate. Every class is a journey of progress that leads you to your language goals. We advocate time-based and effective learning and less of quick-fix or crash course versions of learning.

In our high-quality classes, pronunciation practice carries a rather major emphasis, as this is one of the first things your listeners will hear when you communicate in any language, not only in English. Whether or not you know phonetics, we guide you in achieving the international standards of pronunciation. We emphasise the Teacher Talking Time (TTT) to our teachers, although dependent on the proficiency levels of the classes, to give students at least half the speaking time, to 70% for the student, and 30% for the teacher. We encourage fluency and confidence in our students, while balancing grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and common expressions used.

As for translation, we use your native tongue at times for the sake of accuracy in understanding meaning, and for efficiency purposes. This is done usually just in Beginner classes, and avoided as you progress through the six levels up to Advance classes. It is not necessary to do all the levels to master perfection, and this is mainly dependent on how far you want to take your learning.

We use an open, optimistic, and professional approach when conducting all classes. You will be engaged, encouraged, and motivated to excel in your language abilities. With adequate time and hard work, you will see your communication skills rise to the next level, and confidence that will aid in your career path.

Our Team of Expert Coaches

We take pride in using high-quality materials and have professional and native-speaking language coaches who will ensure learning is always engaging, effective, and applicable to individual needs. Students are allocated the best coaches with the expertise and knowledge matched to their needs and goals. Our aim is to gradually allow the student more speaking time, enabling increased language awareness and confidence.

Born and raised in New York City, John holds a B.A. in Sociology, a Certificate in TESL and an M.A. in English Studies: Language in Education.  He has lived and worked in Taiwan (3 years), Indonesia (6 years) and Singapore (17 years).  While his French is foundational and his Indonesian is functional, his Mandarin is fluent – though he never got around to learning how to write in Chinese!

With about 20 years of teaching experience, he has worked in both language centers and international schools, with students ranging from upper primary to pre-university.  He has also taught Business English and Presentation Skills to adults, having worked briefly in both the travel industry and the financial markets.

John enjoys interacting with his students and challenging them to become both pro-active learners and informed “consumers.”  In today’s hi-tech age of information overload, teachers and students alike are consumers whether they realize it or not – and thus it is vital that we learn how to gather, compare and interpret the information that is bombarding us on a daily basis.

In order for real and long-lasting learning to take place, students must be engaged affectively, not just on a cognitive or merely academic level.  John thus endeavors to conduct lessons in ways that draw out the students’ own life experiences and existing reservoir of personal and cultural knowledge.  He himself enjoys sports (both watching and playing!), traveling, reading and history – and sometimes incorporates these elements into his teaching.

  • William HAN, 33

William has 4 higher education qualifications in different learning areas. Two of them are at master level. He is a trained Australian school teacher who is equivalent to a trained Singapore MOE teacher.

As an Education Officer (government school teacher) from the Department of Education in Australia, William teaches native-level English to local students at an Australian government high school. He also teaches Chinese as Second Language and background-level Chinese to local students. William always stresses on student-centred learning pedagogy when he is teaching Chinese to Australian students. As Australian students do not have any foundation of the Chinese language, William strategically links students’ prior knowledge to Chinese learning. To minimise confusion caused by cultural differences, he shows students who are from varied backgrounds the comparisons between Chinese culture and their cultures. He sometimes uses differentiated curriculum to teach those who have different levels of Chinese in a class. Students are engaged in interesting assignments designed by William. He teaches students not only the Chinese language, but also the way of self-studying Chinese.

As a NAATI accredited professional interpreter, William performs consecutive interpreting and simultaneous conference interpreting assignments in Australia. He also translates legal and commercial documents consigned from China and Australia. William has a Master of Arts in Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting from the University of New South Wales, and he is a professional language expert of both languages. His professional goal is to build a bridge across cultures.

The story that takes us to the beginning...
In 2007, Petrisha Sun found herself transitioning from a multi-national corporation to a local company. In her marketing role, she encountered some very troubling situations indeed. There would be many large group meetings throughout the week, where managers, programmers, merchandisers, and administrative and finance staff with backgrounds from all over Asia were required to be present. The CEO would talk to them about the big picture as well as delegate tasks, with acknowledgement from every department that the work would be done. Yet when Petrisha needed to do her work - through the work of others -  she saw the results from these meetings were that there were very little mutual understanding among her colleagues, leading to confusion and delays.

After some time passed, she realised people need good training from professional coaches, particularly in the English language and Communication skills training for improvements to work efficiency. (Some of her colleagues would have gone further with the help of an English tutor!) Being in a local company deepened her understanding how culturally different it can be from larger companies which have more Western
colleagues, who are also more outspoken, open, and do things common to where they are from. Cultural diversity training and the fine art of communicating came to mind, and together these areas of lack within companies formed the baseline of a service that could be offered to organisations in need.

This seedling for a business idea sprouted into reality when in 2009, a good friend Meng called to offer a job, in training a small group of Chinese sales staff in the area of English, Sales and Customer Service for the watch industry. It all became official.

The past 8 years have been a creative and satisfying time for Petrisha and the dedicated LW team, working together to continuously build Language Works to the boutique language training centre it is today, creating positive change in relationships for executive students from all over the world.
